Workshops, Artist's Talks and Research
Workshops and talks are an important and fulfilling aspect of Nick's practise; both as a means of sharing techniques and as an informative tool to demonstrate and guide a thought process within a group.
Throughout her career she has always spoken about her artistic work, techniques and the reasoning behind them.
'My practise is very material and process based so the approach is an essential part to understanding my work and considerations.

'Part of the residency included a planned workshop, based on my work and techniques. This workshop was for an adult group of experienced printmakers.
I organised a a trip (via St. Michael's Printshop) to Bell Island to take a tour of the Iron Ore-Mine. I based the workshop on etching steel using the environment and considering natural erosion processes that can be used in printmaking.
One of the main attractions for me to do a residency in St Johns, Newfoundland is the large deposits of iron ore within the landscape. Over this period I was exploring oxidising metals such as steel and copper using natural elements found within the environment to create marks and etch the metals..'
Matter of Time Totems
This project depended on the community participation that was led through Art Workshops.
From five workshops, discussions, active involvement from within the community; a 'Wood Circle' has been created, within the site of the Heartlands Project.
Mater of Time Totems had to work on several different levels:
The research and inspiration for 'Matter Of Time Totems' had to include aspects of Cornish history and culture whilst looking to the future use of the 19 acres of disused mine land to create the unique cultural space for the potential and new use of the area. The seemingly natural 'story/folk' legend in Cornwall has influenced the structure of this project.
'I planned workshops, I attended and partook in several promotional talks/discussions at the local colleges and interviewed different members of the community ranging from ex-miners to folksingers.
'My extensive research prior to starting this project was very beneficial in enabling me to inspire the several groups of different students and community members I worked with.

ALSTON ART GROUP Aug 2011
Etching on copper line work shop
This two day workshop was for adults 99% who had never done etching before. The venue was split so there was a day of considering mark making and process and then a period where the group was split in two for 3 hour session to ink and print the plates. The workshop was an introduction to etching allowing the group to focus on one area.
Nicky is planning to organise a four day course; including a short talk, followed by workshops in her Alston studio that will give the group/s more freedom and personal exploration within their own printing techniques.
Dates to be decided...
