Nicky Neate's artistic practise is concerned with the transformation of materials through the printmaking process.
Nicky considers printmaking to be the first art.
'Perhaps it is not the first conscious mark making act but is the first process that enabled a recognised and recorded situation to be considered.'
Prints are used in various ways and are created naturally in the environment
Printmaking is used to investigate the past and inform of the future; they are used in forensic investigations and occur in nature as fossils or marks.
Printmaking has the advantage of being able to create more than one image, which in turn creates a dialogue that can be appreciated in more than one location.
Printmaking, with contemporary technology has also become a virtual concept; through the use of computers, video and various other communication processes.
The virtual use of printmaking has extended the conceptual visualisation of space and relationships taking it into a new era.
Digital printing has enabled Artist's to utilise cross-platform methodologies using old and new techniques within their practise. The notion of a print now extends beyond the use of just the still image.New technology and ways of communicating
has expanded the possibilities within printmaking, enabling the exploration of time, space and virtual environments.
Yves Klein was a leading example of one of the first artist's whose work explored the 'Void'
The Leap into The Void
'In the continuation of his work on the pictorial space, Klein turned his attention to space itself, in other words the void, as specified in his theory of impregnation.'
'My artistic practise is very influenced by the 'theory of impregnation'. Space only exists as a concept, everything is connected and continues to react and transform with itself and all that it comes into contact with. Trace evidence of existence is proof of our past actions and the consequences of the future.'
